6 Simple Ways to Inspect Finned Tubes After Delivery

Quick On-Site Quality Inspection Without Professional Equipment

How to Check the Quality of Finned Tubes During Purchase and Delivery?

Simple Methods for Fast Inspection

When purchasing finned tubes, customers can perform a quick quality check through several simple inspection methods without using advanced testing equipment.

1. Visual Inspection (The Fastest Method)

Fin Condition

Check whether the fins are:

  • Straight and evenly arranged
  • Free from bending, twisting, tearing, or missing sections
  • Uniform in fin spacing
  • Free from excessive compression or deformation
  • Consistent in fin density along the entire tube length

Any large-area fin collapse, deformation, or damage may affect heat transfer performance.

Tube Surface Condition

The base tube should be free from:

  • Cracks
  • Pinholes
  • Impact dents
  • Corrosion
  • Burrs

For galvanized or anti-corrosion coated tubes, check that the coating has:

  • No peeling
  • No uncoated areas
  • No coating runs or uneven accumulation

Welding / Bonding Area Inspection

(Especially important for wrapped fins and sleeve-type fins)

Check the connection between the fin and base tube:

  • Fins should be tightly bonded to the tube surface
  • No large gaps between fins and tubes
  • No fin lifting or edge warping

For high-frequency welded finned tubes:

  • Weld seams should be continuous
  • No broken welds
  • No weak or incomplete welding areas

2. Simple Manual Touch Inspection

Run your hand gently along the fin direction:

Check that:

  • There are no sharp burrs that may cause injury
  • Fin edges are not excessively turned over or deformed

Lightly bend one fin manually:

  • A qualified product should not have fins easily falling off or becoming loose.
  • If fins detach with minimal force, it indicates poor bonding quality and reduced heat transfer performance.

3. Dimensional Inspection (Tape Measure + Caliper)

Randomly select 3–5 finned tubes and measure:

  • Base tube outside diameter
  • Fin height
  • Fin thickness
  • Fin pitch
  • Overall tube length

Compare the measured values with the technical drawings or purchase specifications.

Products with excessive dimensional deviation should be rejected.

Common tolerances:

  • Fin pitch tolerance: ≤ ±0.5 mm
  • Fin height tolerance: ±1 mm

Tube Opening Inspection

Check both tube ends:

  • No reduction in inner diameter
  • No blockage inside the tube

Blocked tubes directly affect fluid flow and should be rejected.

4. Simple Pressure / Leakage Test

(Critical Inspection to Prevent Leakage)

On-Site Water or Air Pressure Test

A simple leakage test can be performed as follows:

  1. Seal both ends of the tube.
  2. Apply low-pressure air at 0.4–0.6 MPa.
  3. Maintain pressure for 5–10 minutes.
  4. Apply soapy water to:
  • Weld seams
  • Tube surface
  • Fin root areas

Inspection result:

  • No bubbles = qualified
  • Bubble formation = leakage caused by pinholes, poor welding, or cracks

For small batches, tubes can also be filled with water and left standing to check for leakage from:

  • Tube ends
  • Tube walls
  • Welding areas

5. Quick Material Identification

(Prevent Material Substitution)

Carbon Steel Finned Tubes

  • Use a magnet to check material characteristics.
  • For galvanized tubes, inspect coating quality:
    • Uniform zinc coating
    • Poor-quality thin coating may expose steel after scratching

Stainless Steel Finned Tubes

  • Stainless steel is generally non-magnetic or slightly magnetic.

  • Use stainless steel testing liquid or chemical identification methods to quickly distinguish materials such as:

  • 201 stainless steel

  • 304 stainless steel

Important:
Be cautious of suppliers providing 201 stainless steel while claiming it is 304. This can lead to rapid corrosion and reduced service life.

6. Sampling Weight Inspection

(Prevent Reduced Wall Thickness)

For the same specification and tube length:

  • Select random samples for weighing.
  • Compare the actual weight with the theoretical weight.

If the actual weight is significantly lower:

  • The base tube wall thickness may have been reduced.
  • Pressure resistance and service life may not meet requirements.

Quick Rejection Criteria for Unqualified Products

Reject finned tubes immediately if they have:

❌ Large-area fin collapse or fin detachment
❌ Leakage during pressure testing
❌ Serious deviation in wall thickness, fin pitch, or fin height
❌ Large-area coating defects, corrosion, or cracks
